Fruit/Nut: Pecan trees produce pecan nuts, which are oval shaped with a thin, hard shell. The nutmeat inside the shell is oily and has a sweet, rich flavor. Pecans are widely used in baking, cooking, and as a snack.
Light: They require full sun and well-draining soil for optimal growth and nut production. The best location for a pecan tree is under an existing tree that shades it from harsh sunlight during summer months while allowing it to receive enough light during winter months when growth occurs.
Watering: Do not tolerate water logging or flooding so they do not do well if planted in low-lying areas where water collects after heavy rains or where irrigation is used during the growing season.
Height: Pecan trees are large, reaching heights of 21 to 30 meters or more.
Temperature: Pecan trees are primarily grown in regions with a warm and humid climate.
Varieties: Choctow, Navaho, Sutex, Osaga, Witchita and Ukulinga.
Pecan nut trees require patience because they can take several years to begin producing significant quantities of nuts. However, once established, they can provide a bountiful and delicious harvest for many years, making them a valuable addition to orchards and home gardens in suitable climates.
